Frequently Asked Questions

If these don’t answer your questions, please email us at [email protected].

Q: When do you row?
A: We row weekday evenings and weekend mornings. We’re on the water from April to the end of October. In the winter, we are (sadly) off the water, but we’re still busy with a variety of winter training activities, from erging to running to skating to movie watching. Come join us anytime of the year!

Q: How can I join HRCR?
A: Email us and we’ll get you started. If you know how to row, we’ll set you up in our masters crew. If you’ve never rowed before, we’ll get you started in one of our learn-to-row classes.

Q: What kinds of boats do you row?
A: Currently, we row singles (1x), doubles (2x), a pair (2-), a quad (4x), fours (4+), and an eight (8+).

Q: Is the water in the Harlem, you know, safe?
A: We row on the river, not in it. Still, it’s a water sport and we DO get wet. Though we wouldn’t recommend drinking the water, its quality has improved a lot over the years. Birds, fish, crabs, barnacles, and other aquatic creatures abound.

Q: Can my teenager join your group or take your learn-to-row class?
A: Our group consists primarily of adults, though teenagers have occasionally rowed with us. Some parent/teen pairs have signed up for learn-to-row, too. We are open to rowers under 18 on a case-by-case basis and with parental permission. Children younger than 14 are too young for our programming.

Q: I can’t afford the fees you charge for lessons/membership; is there any sort of discount available?
A: Our mission is to provide affordable, accessible rowing opportunities. Membership fees are priced well below similar programs thanks to generous donations, grants, and the volunteer work of our members. If our fees still present a significant financial hardship, please contact us. If you would like to donate or volunteer, please also contact us! We are a registered 501c3 not-for-profit corporation and your donations are tax-deductible. Bronx residents, please ask about our 25% Neighbor Discount.

Q: What is your refund policy?
A: Once your class (e.g. Learn-to-Row) or the rowing season (e.g. Masters) has started, refunds are not available. If you withdraw from a program prior to the start date you can receive a full refund minus a $50 processing fee. Once a program or class has started no refunds are allowed. Thank you for your understanding.

Q: Where do you row? How do I get there?
A: HRCR rows on the Harlem River. We launch out of Roberto Clemente State Park in the Bronx. We are easily accessible by MetroNorth (Morris Heights on the Harlem Line), bike, subway or car. Directions are here.
